Beowulf A Hero Essay - 782 Words

Beowulf: A Hero Beowulf is a hero during the Middle Ages because of his generosity, strength, power, and courage. A hero is one who places himself or herself at great risk while performing acts of courage. Beowulf is a hero that put his life on the line for an entire kingdom. He has heroic and superhuman qualities. He must prove his worthiness of a superior warrior. He is recognized for his strengths and power of protecting his people. Beowulf is faced with three forces to fight, Grendel (a monster), Grendel?s mother, and the dragon. Beowulf becomes the king of the Geats for fifty years and eventually dies in a battle against a dragon. Beowulf is first introduced when he hears about the troubles that the Danes are having with some evil†¦show more content†¦(l. 1538). This goes to show how mighty Beowulf was in fighting Grendel?s mother, although he had to fight a little harder than he did with Grendel. He picked her up and slung her down. Throughout the epic poem, Beowulf pr oves his almighty strength that no other man could even survive. For Beowulf to be a hero, he must possess some attributes that could qualify him to be, and one of his main qualities is his strength. He uses his superhuman power to defeat any monster that stands in his way. Beowulf?s strength is shown, ?Then he saw a blade that boded well, a sword in her armory, an ancient heirloom form the days of the giants, an ideal weapon, one that any warrior would envy, but so huge and heavy of itself only Beowulf could wield it in a battle? (l.1557-1562). Beowulf used his mighty arms to lift the sword that hung on the wall and stabbed it deep into the neck of Grendel?s mother. Being able to use a sword that no ordinary man was able to carry shows the great mass of strength behind Beowulf. This type of strength caused Beowulf to stand out from all other men and proves his heroism. Beowulf has power and authority over others. Wulfgar introduced his lord, ?They call the chief in charge of their band by the name of Beowulf? (l. 363-364). The leader, Beowulf, is who the men came along with to help fight the monster.
